ACA Enrollment Just Got 45 Days. Miss It & You're Uninsured
The ACA open enrollment window just got a lot shorter — and most people haven't heard about it yet. A federal rule that took effect in 2026 cut the enrollment period from 75 days down to 45. That's a big deal if you're a small business owner helping employees get covered, or an employee shopping for your own plan.
What Changed in 2026
For years, ACA open enrollment ran from November 1 through January 15. That gave people 75 days to compare plans and sign up.
That window is gone.
The new deadline is December 15. Enrollment still opens November 1, but it closes a full month earlier than before. You now have just 45 days to pick a plan — and there are no extensions.
This applies to all 29 states that use HealthCare.gov, plus most state-run exchanges. If you miss it, you're uninsured until the following year — unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) due to a life event like losing a job, getting married, or having a baby.
Why This Matters for Small Business Owners
If you run a small business, your employees may be counting on the ACA marketplace for their health coverage. That's especially true if you use an ICHRA — an Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement.
With an ICHRA, you give each employee a set dollar amount every month. They use it to buy their own individual health insurance — including ACA marketplace plans. It's a flexible, affordable alternative to traditional group health insurance.
But here's the catch: if your employees miss the December 15 deadline, they can't buy a marketplace plan. That means they can't use their ICHRA funds either — because ICHRA can only reimburse plans with Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC), which ACA marketplace plans provide.
Missing the deadline doesn't just hurt your employees. It can make your entire benefits strategy fall apart for the year.
Mark Your Calendar Now
The enrollment window is simple:
Opens: November 1, 2026
Closes: December 15, 2026
That's it. 45 days. No do-overs.
If you're an employer, send a reminder to your team before November 1. If you're an employee, don't wait until December — plans can take time to activate, and you want coverage starting January 1.
Don't Let a Deadline Cost You Coverage
Health insurance gaps are expensive and stressful. One missed deadline can leave someone uninsured for an entire year. The good news is this is completely avoidable — as long as you know the deadline exists.
Now you do. Share this with someone who needs to hear it before they miss it.
